Studientage für Fotografie 2018: Photography and Society

International interdisciplinary Research Colloquium for PhD Candidates and Post-Docs

The altered technical dispositions of the photographic medium and the enduring evolution of its means of proliferation have led to what may be called “ubiquity of photography” : There is now an ever-present possibility for anyone to take, edit, and share photographs, to de- and recontextualise as well as to rate them. Given the easy access to the photographic practice and the easy ways of digital dissemination of its visual products, there seems to be an unprecedented visibility of the relationship between photography and society.
The 2018 seminar focuses on the circulation of images, the pervasive practice of taking pictures, and the socio-analytical and sociocritical potential of photographs from current as well as historical perspectives in order to identify continuities and discontinuities in these areas. The five-day event will provide 15 PhD candidates and Post-Docs with an opportunity to present their research, with seminars, discussion panels, visits to eminent collections, exchange with curators as well as an artist talk.

With Aida Bosch (Institut für Soziologie, Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg),
Florian Ebner (Chef de service, Cabinet de la photographie, Centre national d’art et de culture Georges-Pompidou, Paris),
André Gunthert (Maître de conférences, École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, Paris),
Andréa Holzherr (Global Exhibitions Manager Magnum Photos, Paris),
Hubert Locher (Kunstgeschichtliches Institut, Philipps-Universität Marburg/Deutsches Dokumentationszentrum für Kunstgeschichte – Bildarchiv Foto Marburg),
Jens Ruchatz (Institut für Medienwissenschaft, Philipps-Universität Marburg)
and Erik Kessels.
